Community Climate Resilience
Nuru’s community climate resilience strategy acknowledges the interconnectedness of the land, the people who cultivate it, and the local economies to which it contributes. For this reason, we believe that sustainable adaptations to the effects of climate change must be led by the people and communities that will have to substantially alter their behavior and potentially their way of life to build climate resilience. Nuru makes this possible by building the adaptive capacity of farmers and their local institutions across five dimensions:
- promoting regenerative agriculture,
- increasing incomes and financial inclusion,
- building food & nutrition security,
- enhancing agribusiness professionalism, and
- galvanizing community-based dialogues.
Together, these areas of impact help communities regain their agency and adapt to the aggravating effects of climate change.
Highlights
Weather Information Systems
Through a partnership with GIZ and a tropical weather forecasting company called Ignitia, Nuru Nigeria launched a pilot project that will be fully executed in 2022, providing hyper-local weather information and extension messaging to farmers through mobile phone networks. Through this collaboration, Nuru farmers receive daily, weekly, and monthly weather forecasts specifically for their farms. Listen to what an early adopter of the service has to say about its impact:
Regenerative Agriculture
The Nuru Collective trained and coached farmers and their cooperative businesses to adopt and mainstream regenerative and climate-smart practices into their production systems this year. Practices include contour farming, agroforestry, crop rotation, soil inoculation, and other sustainable intensification practices that increase yields and incomes while regenerating soils and mitigating unnecessary land-use change.
